Crushed red pepper is made from a combination of dried peppers including ancho, bell, cayenne, and others. Crushed red pepper shakers have become as standard as salt and pepper on tables at Italian restaraunts and pizza parlors in the United States. Red pepper is generally grown in China, India, and Pakistan. It has a pungent, biting hot flavor. It is used in pickling recipes, chowders, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, soups, and sausage.
