Whole Cloves are the dried, unopened flower buds of Eugenia caryophyllus. Cloves are generally grown in Zanzibar, Idonesia, Madagascar, and Brazil. They have a strong aroma and a pungent flavor that pairs well with cinnamon, allspice, vanilla, basil, onion, anise, peppercorns, apples, pears, rhubarb, and pumpkin. Whole cloves are often poked in the outside skin of ham to add flavor. They can be used as an aromatic decoration when inserted into apples or oranges, and are also a key ingredient in chai teas.
